プログレッシヴ・ロックを代表するイギリスのバンド キング・クリムゾン の1stアルバム「クリムゾン・キングの宮殿」(1969年)の表題曲です。
バンド名はこの曲の歌詞(タイトル)からとられたものらしく、クリムゾン・キング(深紅の王)とは本来「 血塗られた暴君 」的なニュアンスの言葉だそうです。
なお、中盤・終盤のインストゥルメンタル・セクションはそれぞれ「The Return Of The Fire Witch」(火の魔女の帰還)、「The Dance Of The Puppets」(操り人形の踊り)というタイトルが付いている為、曲名は「The Court Of The Crimson King (Including “The Return Of The Fire Witch" And “The Dance Of The Puppets")」と表記される事もあります。

1993年にリリースされたベストアルバム。1stアルバム～再結成後のアルバム「Three Of a Perfect Pair」(1984年)までの楽曲を収録。全アルバムを網羅しているわけではなく、代表作「クリムゾン・キングの宮殿」「レッド」「ディシプリン」の割合が多い一方で、「太陽と戦慄」からの収録は無し。名曲『Starless』は後半部分がカットされていたりと、不満はある内容ですが、キング・クリムゾンの雰囲気を軽くなぞるにはよいアルバムかと思います。
