சாதாரண ரயில்கள் தண்டவாளத்தின் மீது சக்கரங்கள் உராய்வதன் மூலம் இயங்கும். ஆனால், மேக்லெவ் ரயில்களில் சக்கரங்கள் கிடையாது. இது காந்தத்தின் 2 அடிப்படை விதிகளைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறது. ஒன்று விலக்கு விசை (Repulsion) ரயிலை தண்டவாளத்திற்கு மேலே மிதக்க வைக்கிறது. மற்றொன்று ஈர்ப்பு விசை (Attraction) ரயிலை அதிவேகமாக முன்னோக்கித் தள்ளப் பயன்படுகிறது. தண்டவாளத்திற்கும் ரயிலுக்கும் இடையே உராய்வு (Friction) இல்லாததால், இவை மிகக் குறைந்த மின்னாற்றலில் அதிக வேகத்தை எட்டுகின்றன.
உலகின் அதிவேகப் பயணம்
மேக்லெவ் ரயில்கள் வேகத்தின் உச்சத்தைத் தொடுபவை. ஜப்பானின் 'L0 Series' மேக்லெவ் ரயில் மணிக்கு 603 கி.மீ வேகத்தில் சென்று உலக சாதனை படைத்துள்ளது. சீனாவில் தற்போது வணிக ரீதியாக வெற்றிகரமாக இயங்கி வரும் 'ஷாங்காய் மேக்லெவ்' ரயில் மணிக்கு சுமார் 430 கி.மீ வேகத்தில் பயணிக்கிறது.

சக்கரங்கள் தண்டவாளத்தில் மோதும் சத்தம் இல்லாததால், இந்த ரயில்கள் மிகவும் அமைதியாகச் செல்லும். பாகங்களுக்கு இடையே உராய்வு இல்லாததால், தேய்மானம் மிகக் குறைவு. இதனால் நீண்ட கால பராமரிப்புச் செலவு குறைகிறது. இவை நேரடியாக நிலக்கரி அல்லது டீசலைப் பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை என்பதால், கார்பன் வெளியேற்றம் பூஜ்ஜியம். இந்த ரயில்கள் தண்டவாளத்தைத் தழுவி (Wrap around) செல்வதால், இவை தடம் புரளும் வாய்ப்பு மிக மிகக் குறைவு.
சவால்கள் என்ன?
இவ்வளவு நன்மைகள் இருந்தாலும், மேக்லெவ் ரயில்கள் உலகம் முழுவதும் பரவாததற்கு சில காரணங்கள் உள்ளன. சாதாரண ரயில் பாதைகளை விட மேக்லெவ் பாதைகளை அமைக்க பல மடங்கு கூடுதல் நிதி தேவைப்படுகிறது. தற்போதுள்ள சாதாரண தண்டவாளங்களில் மேக்லெவ் ரயில்களை இயக்க முடியாது. இதற்கெனத் தனியாகப் புதிய பாதைகளை உருவாக்க வேண்டும்.
எதிர்காலம் எப்படி இருக்கும்?
எதிர்காலத்தில் 'ஹைப்பர்லூப்' (Hyperloop) போன்ற அதிவேகப் போக்குவரத்துத் திட்டங்களுக்கு இந்த மேக்லெவ் தொழில்நுட்பமே அடிப்படையாக அமைகிறது. காற்று இல்லாத வெற்றிடக் குழாய்களில் மேக்லெவ் ரயில்களை செலுத்தினால், அவை ஒலியை விட வேகத்தில் (மணிக்கு 1000 கி.மீ மேல்) பயணிக்க முடியும். தொழில்நுட்ப வளர்ச்சியின் உச்சமாகத் திகழும் மேக்லெவ் ரயில்கள், எதிர்காலப் போக்குவரத்தை இன்னும் வேகமாகவும், பசுமையாகவும் மாற்றும் என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை.
