Dancing to Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park,” Alysa Liu became the first woman from Team USA to win a gold medal in the Olympic women’s individual figure skating in 24 years. It’s been a long time coming for the world champion who famously retired at the age of 16 and came back to the sport only two years ago.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, Alysa’s dad, Arthur Liu, revealed that he has spent between $500,000 to $1 million on his daughter’s skating career. “I spared no money, no time. I just saw talent.”
“It was basically his business,” Alysa said. “It wasn’t even really mine.”
However, after feeling the pressure of being on the ice for more than a decade, Alysa Liu decided that she would only do things on her terms, and effectively shutting out her dad from her endeavors. Her dad was supportive of the decision.
“I get to pick my own program music, I get to help with the creative process of the program,” she revealed in the news program. “If I feel like I’m skating too much, I’ll back down. If I feel like I’m not skating enough, I’ll ramp it up. No one is going to starve me, tell me what I can and can’t eat.”
“He’s a great father, I just didn’t want him to be as invested in it as he was before,” she explained.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s “Operation Gold Awards” will pay athletes $37,500 for gold, $22,500 for silver, and $15,000 for bronze at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
With Alysa Liu winning two at the 2026 Winter Olympics (one with Team USA in the team event), she could earn $75,000.
