Was this helpful? How does the QL (Quick Load) system work on the Canonet QL17?

The QL (Quick Load) system on the Canonet QL17 is a revolutionary film loading device developed by Canon. With this system, you simply place the film in the prescribed place, and the "magic claw" of the QL device accurately leads the film for correct loading. It utilizes ordinary 35mm film in cartridge. When the back cover of the camera is opened, the inner QL cover opens simultaneously, preparing for film loading. The QL cover performs a very important function in film loading by automatically opening and closing with the back cover. For more information, see pages 6, 7, 8 and 25 of the manual.

  1. Open the back cover. Pull the back cover lock and the back will rise. Open the back cover to its maximum. The QL cover will also open simultaneously and be ready for loading film.
  2. Insert cartridge. Raise the rewinding knob sufficiently, then insert the cartridge. After insertion, push the knob back to its former position and put the fork into the axis of the cartridge. If the knob doesn't fully return, turn it slightly to the left or right to properly position it.
  3. Pull film to red mark.
  4. Engage the film perforations with the gear. Face the cartridge as shown in the picture and hold the film down with your left hand to prevent it from rising.
  5. Close the back cover. When the back cover is half-closed, the QL cover will press down on the film. Check through the sprocket window to ensure the film is correctly engaged onto the gear. Merely press the cover to firmly lock it.
  6. Make two unexposed shots. Remove the aperture ring from AUTO, and with the lens cap still on, wind the film advance lever and release the shutter twice. The film counter will advance to
  7. With the next advance, the camera will be ready for the first shot.
  8. Return the aperture ring to AUTO.
Was this helpful? How do you use the light meter on the Canon Canonet QL17?

The Canonet QL17 features a highly sensitive CdS exposure meter that uses a mercury battery as its power source. The meter is fully coupled with the exposure meter, shutter, and lens aperture. In EE photography, when the camera is directed towards the subject, a needle in the viewfinder will swing according to the strength of light, indicating the correct lens aperture for proper exposure. If the needle is within the arrow mark, you can turn the shutter ring to bring the needle within the range of the aperture stops. If the needle is not within the correct exposure section, you may need to change the shutter speed. If the needle does not advance to the correct exposure section, a picture cannot be taken, indicating it is beyond the range of the exposure meter.

Was this helpful? What is the rangefinder patch on the Canon Canonet QL17 used for?

The Canonet QL17 features a double-image superimposing system with a coupled rangefinder. The rangefinder is used to achieve correct focus. When the focusing lever is moved, correct focus is achieved when the two images seen in the center of the viewfinder coincide completely.

Was this helpful? Can the Canon Canonet QL17 be used without a battery?

The Canonet QL17's CdS meter is powered by a mercury battery. Therefore, unless the battery is in position, the meter will not function. However, the manual also describes manually operated aperture photography when the AUTO mark is removed, allowing separate operation of aperture and shutter speed, which implies the camera can function without the meter for manual settings.

Was this helpful? How do you adjust the film speed (ISO/ASA) setting on a Canon Canonet QL17?

To adjust the film speed (ASA) setting on a Canon Canonet QL17, you need to press and turn the film speed setting lever, adjusting it to the speed index of the loaded film. The film speed index is indicated on the film box. The available ASA film speeds are 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800.

Was this helpful? How do you change the aperture on a Canon Canonet QL17?

The aperture on the Canonet QL17 can be changed manually. When the camera is set to manual operation (AUTO mark removed), you can manually operate the aperture and shutter speed separately. The aperture regulates the amount of light. As the numerical value increases, the light quantity decreases by one-half for each stop of the index. The aperture scale ring is used for this adjustment.

Was this helpful? How do you set the shutter speed on a Canon Canonet QL17?

The shutter speed on a Canonet QL17 is set using the shutter speed ring. The available shutter speeds are B, 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, and 1/500. In EE photography, the shutter speed is coupled with the exposure meter and lens aperture, and it is a shutter priority type EE. When adjusting the film speed setting lever, it is essential that the shutter speed is set at a high speed of over 1/15 sec. If using a high speed film and the speed is under 1/15 sec., the Under & Over Exposure Lock will prevent setting. For manual operation, when the AUTO mark is removed, you can manually operate the aperture and shutter speed separately. The shutter speed adjusts the exposure time, with each index meaning double or one-half of the exposure time.

  3. Open the back cover.
  4. Remove the cartridge after completely raising the rewinding knob.
Was this helpful? Why is my Canon Canonet QL17 not taking photos?
  • Incorrect exposure for EE photography: If the exposure is incorrect, the safety device will prevent the shutter button from being released. The needle inside the viewfinder will be within the arrow mark. To resolve this, turn the shutter ring in the direction of the arrow to bring the needle within the range of the aperture stops.
  • Film advance lever not fully wound: If the film advance lever is not fully wound, the shutter will not click even if the shutter button is pressed.
