James Joseph Brown Jr. は、サウスカロライナ州バーンウェルにうまれた(1928年生まれ説があり)。
成人後James Jorseph Brownに改名。
この教護院での服役中に、この曲で掛け合いのコーラスをしているBobby Byrd ボビー・バードと出会う。
その後Byrdのグループ「エイヴォンズ」に参加し、ByrdはR&Bバンドとして活動していく。「フェイマス・フレイムズ」と改名し、オハイオ州シンシナティでSid Nason のキング・レコード と契約した。
だが、Sid はJamesが「プリーズ～」と歌い始めると、腹を立てスタジオから出ていってしまう。 「こんなものは音楽でも何でもない。ただのクズだ」というのが理由。
Jamesは、妙味を説明して説き伏せ、 1956年１st シングル【Please, Please, Please】をやっとリリースした。
レコードには「James Brown with the Famous Flames」とクレジットされ、同シングルはチャート5位を記録し、ミリオン・セラーとなった。
だが続く9枚のシングルが商業的に失敗した後、キング・レコードはバンドと契約解除を行おうとしたが、1958年「Try Me」がビルボード48位の小ヒットになった為に、クビは免れた。
1960年代に入ると、アメリカ南部とR&Bチャートだけでの成功に甘んじていたのが、上層部の反対を押し切ってリリースした『Live at the Apollo (1962)』のヒットで、全国的人気を得ることが出来た。
このLive アルバム後に、最初のFunk ナンバーと言われる1964年リリースの【Out of Sight】を発表し【Night Train】を制作。
この【Out of Sight】は、スマッシュ・レコードからリリースした為、キング・レコードとの契約破棄に関する法廷闘争となり、裁判所は録音作品の1年間リリース禁止を言い渡してしまう。
この時期にこの【Get Up(I Feel lik Being A) Sex Machine セックス・マシーン】を初め、【Super Bad】【Soul Power】【Make It Funky】など名曲揃い！
それに伴い、William “Bootsy” Collinsブーツィー・コリンズ（ベース）らを中心とする新しいバンドに変わる。
彼らは「JBズ The J.B.’s」と名付けられ、その名義でのリリースも行うようになった。

1970年3月にJBズを結成し、この曲が、JBズとレコーディングした最初の作品になるの。 1970年4月25日、ナッシュビルのスターデイ・キング・スタジオで録音されたもの。 JBとBobby Byrdは曲のラストの方で、Elmore James エルモア・ジェームスの【Shake Your Money Maker】を歌うのが面白味を出しているし、間奏のピアノはJBが弾いていて良い感じ。 わずか２テイクで完成させたのだから、名曲とは勢いで出来るのかもしれないね。 同年6月シングルA面を「パート1」、B面を「パート2」として発表 。ビルボード・Hot 100で15位を記録。また、ビルボードのHot R&B Singlesチャートで2位、イギリスで32位を記録。 9月に発売されたライブ・アルバム『Sex Machine』に10分48秒のバージョンが収録されるが、これはスタジオでレコーディングされたものに効果音や歓声をかぶせて実況録音風にしたバージョンである。 この曲は、多くのミュージシャンに愛されて来た。 1996年には、Iggy Popがカヴァーしている。

この曲は、わかりやすいアレの歌だが(笑)、一昨日、Lyraが和訳&解説したThe Stranglersの曲みたいな、誰でも構わずの、ど変態野郎の歌ではなく(内容は、反体制の意味もあるから深い意味があるが)、狙った女に対してのラブソングだから、異常性がない分、Lyraには、普通のラブソングであり、Funkの中でもPopで、キャッチーな最高な曲だと思う。

エロエロ単語は、いくつかあるが、邦題タイトルのセックスマシーンがそのままアレの機械だから、やめてよー、て引いてしまう以外は、Shake Your Money Malkerがヤバいだけで、あとはすごくシンプルだと思う。
だからLyraは、Get Upを「立ち上がれ」と訳したし、「数を確かめる」にしたのは、兵隊達を召集し数を確かめるときに「Count Off」とアメリカでは言っていたから、ダブルミーニングにしたくて、そう和訳しました。
【Get Up】と”Get On Up”のJBとBobbyの掛け合いの繰り返しや、単調でシンプルなギターリフが、ずっと続くでしょう？

【Sex Machine】 was one of the first songs Brown recorded with his new band, The J.B.’s. In comparison with Brown’s 1960s solo funk hits such as “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”, the band’s inexperienced horn section plays a relatively minor part. Instead, the song centers on the insistent riff played by brothers Bootsy and Catfish Collins on bass and guitar and Jabo Starks on drums, along with the call and response interplay between Brown and Byrd’s vocals, which consist mostly of exhortations to “get up / stay on the scene / like a sex machine”. During the song’s final vocal passages Brown and Byrd started to sing the main hook of Elmore James’ blues classic “Shake Your Moneymaker.”
The original single version of “Sex Machine” — recorded, like many of Brown’s hits, in just two takes — begins with a spoken dialogue between Brown and his band which was recreated with minor variations in live performances:

This number, one of Brown’s most popular songs, was one of the very first tunes recorded with The J.B.’s as the backing band. The group featured a young Bootsy Collins on bass and his brother Phelps “Catfish” Collins on guitar.
