一番の歌詞は、たぶん全てのカラパナのCDブックレットでは「I've sniffed or seen or felt a winter sea dew」となっている。また、オリジナルのレコードについている歌詞は「I've lived on the sand and felt a winter sea dew」だ。歌を聞くとlivedではなくsがあたまに聞こえる。いったいどちらが正しいのか。もう何年も前のことだが、僕はマラニに直接聞いてみた。CDに入っていたブックレットを持参して。そうしたら、本当はこれだよ、と彼はブックレットに書き込んでくれた。そこには「I've slept on sand and felt the winter sea dew」とあった。というわけで、ここではマラニからおそわった歌詞になっています。

2018年12月28日、とてもショックなニュースが入ってきた。マラニがカウアイ島で亡くなったという。心臓発作だった。享年69歳。最初に知ったのは、その日のお昼過ぎ（ハワイでは27日の夜）カラパナメンバーによるSNSの投稿だった。そこには一言「Sad news. Love you Malani」とだけあった。何のことかわからなかった。いや意味はわかっていたのだが、頭のどこかがそれを拒否していた。信じられないし信じたくなかった。しかし、続々と入る情報で現実を突きつけられた。電車の中で、カラパナの日本のレコード会社担当ディレクターだった友人から届いたメッセージを読んだとき、僕は不覚にも涙をこぼしてしまった。帽子を目深にかぶりなおして隠そうとしたけれど、まわりの乗客は変なおじさんだと思ったことだろう。

2019年2月現在、Go Fund Me という寄付サイトで遺族に対する募金活動が行われている。目標は28,000ドルで、2月14日の時点で17,000ドル弱が集まっている。
