  • Two pipe cleaners
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • String or ribbon

STEPS 1 Find an ice cream tub.

Find an empty ice cream tub or similar-sized container to upcycle into a drum. You can use paper-based, plastic, styrofoam or tin tubs. Wash and let the the container dry.

2 Punch a pair of holes.

This step is only necessary if you want to add a strap so you can wear the drum while playing it. Punching holes is also only possible if your ice cream tub is made of paper carton. If the container is made of plastic, metal or styrofoam, you can attach a strap using a hot glue gun in Step 12.

3 Prime the container.

Prime the outside of the ice cream tub, including the lid by painting with white acrylic paint. The white acrylic paint will cover any prints on the container and will make the final colors look more vibrant.

4 Paint with the final colors.

Once the white paint dries, transform your ice cream tub into a drum by painting it with your preferred colors of acyrlic paint or poster paint.

5 Prep supplies for the drum sticks.

To make a pair of drum sticks, gather two metal shank buttons, two drinking straws and a pair of pipe cleaners. A shank button is a button with a loop at the back.

6 String a button.

String one metal shank button through the middle of a pipe cleaner.

7 Bend the pipe cleaner.

Bend the pipe cleaner at the middle.

8 Insert into a drinking straw.

Insert the entire length of the folded pipe cleaner inside the drinking straw.

9 Cut the tip of the drinking straw.

Cut the excess length of drinking straw.

10 Glue the button in place.

Use a glue gun to fix the shank button onto the drinking straw.

11 Make another drum stick.

Make another drum stick following Steps 6 to 10 to come up with a pair of drum sticks.

12 Attach a strap.

Cut a string or ribbon long enough for your drum strap. Insert the ends of the string through the holes on the drum. Make a large knot on each end of the string.

If your ice cream tub is made of plastic, metal or styrofoam, tape or hot glue the ends of the strap inside the container.

13 Place the lid.

Place the lid on the drum.

14 Decorate the drum.

You can further decorate your drum, if you like. Place stickers, punched-out paper shapes, glitter glue, sequins and other accents.

15 Use your drum.

Finally, try playing your drum! Use your hands or the drum sticks to make some noise. You can also wear the drum by putting the strap around your neck.
