「Strike while the iron is hot.」-English proverb(イギリスのことわざ)
「strike」=「 打つ、たたく 、当たる、叩き落す、殴り倒す、襲う、直撃する、光が照り付ける、音が聞こえる、鋳造する、発見する、取り外す、平らにする、取り決める、急に～する、急いでいく、根を張る、感心させる、心に浮かぶ、座礁する、しみこませる、印象付ける、向かう、ストライキをする」 という意味の動詞 、「打つこと、打撃、急襲爆撃、ストライキ、ストライク、大当たり(油田や鉱山)」という意味の名詞です。
「strike」の意味はかなり多岐に渡りますが、まずは「 打つ、叩く」という意味 と、 瞬間的に起こるイメージ を持っておいて、後はその都度覚えていきましょう。
「strike」の前に主語がないので、 命令形 になっています。
「while～」とは？「while～」=「～の間に」という意味になります。
「while(ワイル)」=「 ～する間に、～する限り、～なのに、それに対して、だけれども」という意味 の接続詞、「時、時間、少しの時間」という意味の名詞、「ぶらぶら過ごす」という意味の動詞でもあります。
「the iron is hot」とは？「the iron」=「その鉄」という意味になります。
「the(ダ)」=「 その、あの、例の」という意味 の定冠詞で、「それだけ、ますます」という意味の副詞です。
「iron(アイエン)」=「 鉄、鉄製品、アイロン、鉄分、固定器具、堅さ、冷酷なこと」という意味 の名詞、「鉄の様な、鉄製の、堅い、冷酷な」という意味の形容詞、「アイロンをかける・かかる、手かせ・足かせをする、鉄を張る」という意味の動詞です。
「is」=「～は」
「is(イズ)」=「 ～は」という意味 の動詞、be動詞です。
「the iron is～」=「その鉄は～」という意味になります。
「hot」=「熱い」という意味になります。
「hot(ハット)」=「 熱い 、暑い、からい、激しい、活発な、興奮した、人気のある、真新しい、出来立ての、もう少しの、不正に手に入れた、お尋ね者の、夢中で、優秀で、放射能のある、うまい、精通して、馬鹿げた、やかましい」 という意味の形容詞 、「熱く、暑く、激しく」という意味の副詞、「冷えた食べものを温める、激化する(させる)、興奮する、高性能にする」という意味の動詞です。
「the iron is hot」=「その鉄は熱い」という意味になります。
「while the iron is hot」とは？「while」と「the iron is hot」をくっつけて、
「while the iron is hot」=「その鉄が熱い間に」という意味になります。
全てつなげて訳すると・・・「Strike while the iron is hot.」=「打て、その鉄が熱い間に。」 ＝「その鉄が熱い間に打て。」という意味になります。
